Aussie cast in Netflix’s Daredevil

Nikolai Nikolaeff.

Nikolai Nikolaeff plays a supporting role in Daredevil, the Netflix-commissioned series based on the Marvel character created by Drew Goddard.

Charlie Cox (The Theory of Everything, Boardwalk Empire) is the lead, blind lawyer Matt Murdock by day and the crime-fighting superhero Daredevil by night in the Hell’s Kitchen neighbourhood of New York City.

Nikolaeff plays Vladimir, a Russian emigrant who with his brother Anatoly (Gideon Emery) is trying to forge a name for himself in the US. He filmed his role in New York last year but the full cast has only just been revealed.

"Playing a character on a Marvel project and being in New York was an amazing experience for me," he told IF today. "I can't tell quite articulate the feeling I had of getting off the subway in Red Hook (Brooklyn) that first day and walking down the street to set and seeing all the buses lined up ready to go. And then seeing the Statue of Liberty on the horizon past all the unit trucks and amazing crew prepping to make this incredible series."

This is the Aussie actor’s second US series following the NBC/Matchbox Pictures’ Oz-lensed Camp. He was a regular in Sea Patrol and, earlier in his career, The Saddle Club, Wicked Science and Crash Zone. He’s repped in Australia by Aran Michael Management and in the US by MGMT-Entertainment. .

The Daredevil regulars include Vincent D’Onofrio (Wilson Fisk), Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple), Bob Gunton (Leland Owlsley), Scott Glenn (Stick), Ayelet Zurer (Vanessa Marianna), Vondie Curtis-Hall (Ben Urich) and Aussie Toby Leonard Moore (Wesley).

Produced by Marvel Television in association with ABC Studios, the 13-episode series will premiere on Netflix on April 10.

Moore, who was in John Wick, has been cast opposite Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis in the Showtime drama pilot Billions, which takes a forensic look at the world of high finance. Giamatti plays hard charging, whip smart US Attorney Chuck Rhoades and Moore is the brilliant, ambitious hedge fund king, Bobby “Axe” Axelrod..
