BO Report: ‘Logan’ claws its way to the top, ‘Jasper Jones’ debuts

Hugh Jackman in 'Logan'.

Hugh Jackman's final outing as Wolverine pulled in the punters over the weekend off the back of strong reviews and little in the way of fresh competition.

Fox's Logan, directed by James Mangold (The Wolverine), pulled in $7.8 million over its first weekend from 414 screens  a whopping screen average of $18,966.

Logan's closest competition, but not really, was Hidden Figures, taking $1.8 million over the weekend. Also from Fox, the Oscar-nominated crowdpleaser has racked up $11.7 million after three weeks, dropping a mere 34 per cent over the weekend.

Transmission's Lion came in third, down only 32 per cent after seven weeks in release to take more than $1 million over the weekend. The See-Saw film has made $26.6 million in Oz so far and is still on 316 screens.

Jasper Jones, Madman's adaptation of the beloved novel by Craig Silvey, debuted in fourth spot with $632,538 over the weekend, bringing its total (with previews) to $815,428.

Universal sequel Fifty Shades Darker was a smidge below, dropping 56 per cent for weekend takings of $631,274 off 248 screens (versus Jasper's 222) for a cume of $17.1 million after four weeks.

Matt Damon's The Great Wall, the largest US-China co-production ever, took $619,243 over the weekend, dropping 62 per cent after three weeks. The action-adventure film, still on 250 screens in Australia, has taken $6.6 million overall.

Paramount's Rings, the reboot of Naomi Watts-starrer The Ring from 2002, took $405,424, dropping 59 per cent in its second week to bring its cume to $1.7 million.

Debuting a fraction below Rings, in eighth place, was YA drama Before I Fall, starring Zoey Deutch (Everybody Wants Some!, Why Him?). The Roadshow release took $402,399 over the weekend from 151 screens.

In its second week, Sony's T2: Trainspotting dropped 61 per cent for weekend takings of $381,530. Danny Boyle's long-in-the-works sequel has now rung up close to $2.1 million locally.

Rounding out the top ten was Roadshow comedy Fist Fight, which took $355,337 in its second week to bring its cume to $1.5 million.

Just outside the top ten was Best Picture winner Moonlight (also Roadshow), which enjoyed a healthy post-Oscars bump to ring up $324,214 over the weekend (the film's takings the previous weekend were $100,686).

The acclaimed drama from director Barry Jenkins is on 82 screens after six weeks in release, and is sitting on a total of $1.4 million.
