‘Call Me By Your Name’, ‘Lady Bird’, ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ lead AACTA International noms

A total of 15 films will duke it out at next year’s AACTA International Awards, with Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird and Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri leading the pack with five nominations each.

All three will compete for Best Film alongisde Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk, and Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water.

Among the Aussie nominees are Margot Robbie, who is up for Best Lead Actress for her portrayal of disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding. The announcement follows on from her Golden Globe nomination for the performance yesterday.

The film’s director and fellow Aussie, Craig Gillespie will compete for the Best Direction gong against Guadagnino, Nolan, Gerwig and del Toro.

Nicole Kidman, who last week won two awards at AACTAs local event, is up for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in psychological horror The Killing of a Sacred Deer. It is Kidman’s second consecutive nomination in the category, having won last year for Lion.

Hugh Jackman is also up for Best Lead Actor for Logan, Ben Mendelsohn Best Supporting Actor for Darkest Hour and Abbie Cornish Best Supporting Actress for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

“Now in our seventh year, we are delighted to continue celebrating international excellence within the film industry, honouring the world’s best performers, practitioners and productions,” said AFI | AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella.

“It’s great to see our International Chapter members adding their uniquely Australian perspective to the conversations, with a number of nominations for Australians who have excelled on the world stage. We are very proud to count these Australian filmmakers among our nominees and I congratulate all the nominees and wish them every success during the upcoming Awards season.”

The ceremony will be held January 7 at the The Avalon Hollywood and will be screened on Foxtel.
