Director Julius Avery Joins Cherub Pictures

Director Julius Avery will be joining the award winning production house Cherub Pictures in March. Best known for his strong performance direction, Avery was previously signed to Renegade Films (Melbourne) where he completed highly lauded campaigns for:

* TAC (Grey Melbourne)
* Royal Australian Navy (GPYR Melbourne)
* Me Bank (GPYR Melbourne)
* Connex (Clemenger Harvey Edge)
* Worksafe (on air currently) (Shannons Way) and
* Australian Super (Shannons Way) to name a few

In 2008 Avery’s short film “Jerrycan” won the Jury Prize at the 61st Cannes Film Festival, as well as an AFI award for Best Short Fiction and the Australian Directors Guild award for Best Direction.

Biography – Julius Avery, DIRECTOR

In 2008 Avery was the Jury Prize winner at the 61st Cannes Film Festival for his film “Jerrycan”, about a boy called Nathan who risks everything after he is bullied into making a life and death decision. The film also won Best Short Fiction Film at the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards and an Australian Directors Guild award for Best Direction in a Short Film.

Other awards include the 2006 IF Award for Best Australian Unproduced Screenplay and the 2006 Melbourne International Film Festival Emerging Australian Filmmaker of the Year.
In 2009 “Jerrycan” was awarded with an Honorable Mention at the Sundance Film Festival, as well as an Honorable Mention at the 59th Berlin Film Festival in the Generation Kplus competition. This announcement makes a rare triple achievement for a film to be selected for three of the major film festivals – Cannes, Sundance and Berlin. The film also picked up gold in the prestigious New York Festival advertising awards.

In January 2009, Julius was invited by Screen Australia to attend RADAR in Los Angeles that showcased Australia's most promising directors as part of G'day USA. The audience comprised of 500 invited film and television industry executives, key influencers from LA's business community and Australia Week sponsors and guests.

During his time with Renegade Films he completed a large number of high profile TVC campaigns including TAC, Royal Australian Navy, Me Bank, Connex, Worksafe and Australian Super.

Julius Avery holds a Masters in Directing from the VCA Film and Television school.

Biography – Michele Bennett, FOUNDER & EXECUTIVE PRODUCER CHERUB PICTURES

Michele Bennett founded Cherub Pictures in 1991 for the production of music videos, documentaries and television commercials. Since its inception Cherub has expanded to include the development and production of feature films, becoming one of Australia’s leading production companies.

Michele’s 20 year career has included producing music videos for artists such as INXS, U2, Prince,
Silverchair, Foo Fighters and many other noted Australian artists, as well as the documentaries Lovetown for U2 and Welcome to Wherever you Are for INXS.

In 2000 Michele produced the widely awarded box office hit, Chopper, developed through Cherub Pictures. In 2005 Michele’s second feature film The Magician was released in Australia and the UK to widespread critical acclaim.
