Escape the summer heat and soak up the most absorbing cinema shorts from around the world with FLiCKERFEST, Australia’s leading short film festival, returning to the Judith Wright Centre this February.
A record 2300 entries were received for FLiCKERFEST 2013, and the final programme will feature the 100 most innovative, creative and cutting edge short films from Australian and international contenders.
Queensland is not without representation in this year’s programme, with two local films set to tour across the country.
Flying the Queensland flag is Darling Downs-born filmmaker S.P. Krause and his film Huge, which follows comedian Barry Branch (John Batchelor) on the cusp of a big break that could make him a movie star.
The second local film is Captive by Michael Noonan and features Brisbane’s own Margi Brown Ash in a story where a confused old man realises that everything he thought he knew – including his ‘soul mate’ – is not what it appears to be.
Also on the Aussie front is Nash Edgerton’s short film The Captain, which was the only Australian short film accepted into the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and will have its world premiere in the FLiCKERFEST programme.
Past home grown competitors who are now enjoying international success include Sundance awarded director David Michod (Animal Kingdom) and Cannes Film Festival winner Warwick Thornton (Samson and Delilah).
This year the Best Australian Film Award has become Academy® Accredited and will now join the festival’s existing Academy® Accredited Awards for Best Film and Best Animation in the international section. The honour of this accreditation will ensure greater opportunities for Australian short filmmakers internationally.
Opening Night – Best of Australian Shorts plus fully catered after party

Leading with Queensland filmmaker S.P. Krause’s dark satire Huge (filmed in Brisbane and the Gold Coast) the Australian films on the opening night of the Brisbane programme includes everything from crazy eulogies to wrecking yard battles, from hung-over drivers to Japanese salary men.

Best of International 1
Fri 22 February
The first night of the international programme offers a taste of short films from Spain, Sweden, Canada, Belgium, the USA and the UK. Highlights include Curfew from the USA currently nominated for Best Live Action Short at the upcoming Academy ®Awards.

Leading with Michael Noonan’s dark comedy Captive The Best of International 2 programme features a wide range of Australian premieres from around the world, including Norway, France and Canada. It also includes Tiger Boy from Italy winner of The Renault Award for Best International Short Film (Academy® Accredited)
