Film Victoria and FremantleMedia Australia have partnered up to offer three early-to-mid career Victorian directors the chance to shadow a director on the set of Neighbours and shoot two scenes under supervision.

At least two of those selected for the initiative will then be invited to return to shadow a director for another block of episodes, with the chance to directing up to half an episode. At least one person will then be given directorial responsibility for a complete episode.

The initiative continues an ongoing collaboration between Film Victoria and Fremantle; last year four early career creatives were given skills development opportunities on Picnic at Hanging Rock. Film Vic has also recently provided funding to Neighbours to see the soap continue to film 250 episodes a year.

Film Victoria CEO Caroline Pitcher said: “This is an incredible opportunity for developing Victorian directors to gain practical, hands on exposure to one of the most popular Australian drama serials ever produced.”

“We’ve seen the benefits of these development opportunities through our Key Talent Placements program which continues to generate tangible outcomes for Victorian key creatives.”

Neighbours EP Jason Herbison said: “Neighbours has been a launch pad for many careers – in front and behind the camera – and we’re delighted to be able to provide this opportunity to a new generation of directors. Our production methods are constantly evolving so the experience will provide a unique insight into our style of filming and their input will also be invaluable.”

Successful recipients will start their placement in June 2018, subject to the production schedule and allocation of supervising directors.

Applications are open now and close April 6.
