After being launched at the Sundance Film Festival followed by MIFF, Nash Edgerton’s Mr Inbetween will premiere on Foxtel’s showcase on Monday October 1 at 8.30pm.

The six-part drama written by and starring Scott Ryan as hitman Ray Shoesmith, based on his 2005 movie The Magician, was commissioned by FX’s Australian channel, which was dumped by Foxtel in February.

Produced by Michelle Bennett for Jungle Entertainment and Blue-Tongue Films, the plot follows Ray as he raises his precocious daughter Brittany (Edgerton’s real-life daughter Chika Yasumura) and embarks on a romance with EMT Ally (Brooke Satchwell). The cast includes Damon Herriman, Justin Rosniak, Matt Nable, Edmund Lembke-Hogan, Nicholas Cassim and YouTube star Natalie Tran.

“To have Mr Inbetween finally made was incredible and a relief,” said Ryan. “In the series we wanted the audience to question whether they like him or not and that was a challenge in the writing and would be a challenge for me as an actor when it came to capturing that in my performance.

Mr Inbetween has all kinds of elements, it’s not just funny, it’s not just violent. It’s like a three course meal, you’re getting a bit of everything within his morally complex, dangerous and funny world.”

Fox’s flagship US cable entertainment network FX will launch the series on September 25 and has co-commissioned with Foxtel the development of a second season.

Before Mr Inbetween, Edgerton directed Gringo, starring Charlize Theron, Joel Edgerton, Amanda Seyfried and Thandie Newton. He also serves as executive producer on Joel Edgerton’s drama Boy Erased, which stars Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Joel and will be released worldwide in November by Universal Pictures.

Nash Edgerton said: “Scott is a very talented writer and actor with a great natural ability and he’s able to tread that line of being really charming and really scary at the same time. That’s what I loved so much about the character when I first saw The Magician and why I was interested in exploring the character further.”
