Jameson IF Awards Sydney announces nominations for 2011

Feel-good film Red Dog and Australian/UK co-production Oranges and Sunshine have dominated the nominations for this year’s Jameson IF Awards Sydney.

Red Dog, which has raked in almost $20 million since opening in early-August, has secured nine nominations, while Oranges and Sunshine – which is the second biggest box office success this year with almost $4 million – took eight.

The two features were closely followed by Michael Rymer's Face To Face, which received an impressive six nominations (including Best Feature Film and Best Direction) and psychological horror flick Snowtown, which received five (including Best Direction). Fred Schepisi’s The Eye of the Storm received three nominations (including Best Feature Film).

The nominations were announced this morning at a special ceremony in Sydney, hosted by Matt Day, Susie Porter and Matilda Brown. To see photos, click here.

The Jameson IF Awards are largely determined by public votes. This year the show – which is the Australian film industry's night of nights –  will be hosted by Offspring actor Eddie Perfect.

Red Dog, the tale of a hitchhiking dog that unites an isolated mining town, is nominated in the Best Feature Film, Best Cinematography, Best Script, Best Production Design, Best Editing and Best Music categories, while director Kriv Stenders is nominated for Best Director. Josh Lucas and Rachael Taylor are also nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively.

Oranges and Sunshine, a highly-emotional story about one of our country’s biggest secrets, is also nominated in the Best Feature Film, Best Script, Best Music, Best Production Design, Best Editing and Best Actor/Actress (David Wenham, Emily Watson) categories. The film was also nominated in the Best Sound category.

In other categories, Julietta Boscolo, Zak Hilditch and Anthony Maras were nominated for the AFTRS IF Award for Rising Talent, while National Film & Sound Archive Independent Spirit Award nominees included Breaking The News, I Am Eleven and Mad Bastards.

In the television categories, nominees in the Out of the Box IF Award include: Alison Bell, Blake Davis, Todd Lasance, Annie Maynard, Anna McGahan and Jessica Tovey. Nominees recognised for their contribution to the television industry include: Peter Andrikidis, Mikael Borglund, Ewan Burnett, Michael Cordell, John Holmes, Claudia Karvan, Des Monaghan, David Mott, Rachel Perkins and Roger Simpson.
