Writer/director Joss Whedon's horror film The Cabin in the Woods opened in Australia over the weekend, following a passionate fan campaign.
The film, which stars Thor's Chris Hemsworth, was shot back in 2009 but was released in the UK and the US earlier this year on the back of Whedon's record-breaking blockbuster The Avengers.
Roadshow was originally planning to release the film straight to DVD here, but fans bombarding the company's Facebook page led to the distributor scheduling a one-week, one-screen release in most capital cities. The Cabin in the Woods took $85,152 from seven screens over the weekend, amounting to a screen average of $12,165, with many fans reporting on Facebook and Twitter that they attended sold out sessions.
Prometheus remains at the top of the box office in its second week of release. The Fox film from director Ridley Scott earned $3 million from 470 screens over the weekend. Its total gross now stands at $12.9 million.
Sony Pictures' Adam Sandler comedy That's My Boy debuted at number two, taking $1,434,873, while Warner Bros 80's musical Rock of Ages came in third with $1.35 million.
Men in Black 3 ($1.1 million) and What to Expect When You're Expecting ($894,183) rounded out the top five.
Jump Street's local thriller Swerve dropped 59 per cent in its second weekend. The film took $10,120 from 15 screens.
