JUCY to receive national theatrical release, posts offshore sales

Press release from KCDC

JUCY, the “womantic” comedy that garnered rave reviews at its 2010 Toronto International Film Festival premiere has inked a series of impressive deals through US distributor Viva Pictures – with Blockbuster, Amazon and Netïfix – all timed to coincide with the film’s Australian theatrical release on 3 November.

JUCY tells the story of best friends Jackie and Lucy, who don’t want to grow up. The gorgeous and funny pair are out to prove they are adults by getting a boyfriend and a real job in two months. All hell breaks loose, of course, and the events that unfold threaten to drive an irreversible wedge between the girls, but in the end, “womance” (close, platonic female friendship) wins out. The film delivers lots of laughs, a few tears and some unique dance moves.

Variety, along with many independent critics, reviewed the film favourably at TIFF 2010 and it has had sell out screenings at Seattle International Film Festival, Brisbane International Film Festival, Gold Coast Film Festival, Independent Film Festival for Women in Seoul, and at the London Australian Film Festival.

VOD seems to be providing a new doorway into the US market for independent, international features: "We are excited that American critics and movie aficionados have stepped out early to support this film recognizing thoughtful, creative and clever film making. As an official selection of Blockbuster’s "Hidden Gems" program, JUCY is posed to further build on Australia's filmmaking influence in America" said Victor Elizalde, Managing Partner, Viva Pictures.

The film was helmed by Louise Alston (All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane), written by Stephen Vagg (All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane) and produced by Kelly Chapman. One of the film’s executive producers is Chris Adams, formerly of Participant Media. Sydney-based Odin’s Eye Entertainment and Chapman’s KCDC are distributing in Australia.
