The 6th AACTA International Awards were held in Los Angeles over the weekend, and saw a mixture of both Aussie and international talent honoured.

La La Land was the big winner of the night, taking home Best Film over competitors Manchester by the Sea, Lion, Hacksaw Ridge and Arrival. Emma Stone also won Best Lead Actress for her role in the musical.

Mel Gibson earned Best Direction for Hacksaw Ridge, following on from the nine awards the film received at the domestic AACTA awards in December.

Fellow Aussie film Lion picked up two gongs, with Nicole Kidman awarded Best Supporting Actress, and Dev Patel Best Supporting Actor.

Manchester by the Sea – nominated in six of the seven categories –  also took home two awards, with writer-director Kenneth Lonergan earning Best Screenplay and Casey Affleck taking home Best Lead Actor.

Daniel MacPherson hosted the awards, held at the Avalon Hollywood, along with presenters Isla Fisher, Ruby Rose, Julian McMahon, Alan Dale, Radha Mitchell, Damon Herriman, Luke Bracey and Simon Baker.

Attendees included Gibson, Kidman, Patel, Luke Hemsworth  Lonergan, Harvey Weinstein, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Joel Edgerton.

“From historical biopics and dramas to a tribute to the Golden Age of musical films, it’s wonderful to see such a dynamic mix of international and Australian achievement honoured tonight – and we’re delighted to see Australian’s Nicole Kidman and Mel Gibson honoured for Australian films Lion and Hacksaw Ridge,” said AFI | AACTA CEO Damien Trewhella

“For the past six years, the voting patterns of the Australian Academy’s international chapter have often indicated those of the SAG Awards, Golden Globes, BAFTAs and the Oscars. I’d like to congratulate all winners and wish them every success throughout the awards season.”
