Mad Max: Fury Road claims Australian record for most Academy Award nominations

Mad Max: Fury Road.

George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road has collected 10 Academy Award nominations including Best Picture and Best Director.

This is the most nominations ever for an Australian film.

Despite breaking the Aussie record it was still only the second most nominated film overall this year.

Alejandro González Iñárritu's The Revenant took that mantle and will provide stiff competition for the road rage epic come awards night.

Cate Blanchett has also been nominated for best actress in leading role for her potrayal of a housewife who is threatened with losing custody of her daughter because of a relationship with another woman in Carol.

Mad Max: Fury Road surpassed Moulin Rouge's previous record haul of eight nominations, of which it won for costume design and set decoration.

Miller won the animated feature film Oscar for Happy Feet in 2007.

The ten nominations include: Best Picture Doug Mitchell and George Miller (Producers) for Mad Max: Fury Road; Director George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road Production Design Colin Gibson (Production Design); Lisa Thompson (Set Decoration) for Mad Max: Fury Road; Visual Effects Andrew Jackson (UK/AUS), Tom Wood (UK/AUS), Dan Oliver and Andy Williams (UK) for Mad Max: Fury Road; Film Editing Margaret Sixel (SA/AUS) for Mad Max: Fury Road; Makeup and Hair Styling Lesley Vanderwalt, Elka Wardega and Damian Martin for Mad Max: Fury Road; Sound Mixing Chris Jenkins (US), Gregg Rudloff (US) and Ben Osmo for Mad Max: Fury Road; Sound Editing Mark Mangini (US) and David White for Mad Max: Fury Road; Costume Design Jenny Beavan (UK) for Mad Max: Fury Road; Cinematography John Seale for Mad Max: Fury Road.

Screen Australian chief executive, Graeme Mason said: “We are beyond thrilled to see Dr George Miller and his Mad Max: Fury Road team gain the recognition they so richly deserve,” he said.

“I’m particularly pleased to see so many technical, production and design artists nominated – an area in which Australia continues to excel, and a reminder of the skill it takes to create a world like that of Mad Max.”

“It’s no surprise that Cate Blanchett’s work on Carol has also been recognised, further cementing her place as one of Australia’s great screen talents and cultural ambassadors.”
