Cinematographer Meg White was today named as the inaugural recipient of the Screen Australia Onbass Fellowship, a full-tuition scholarship for emerging Australian filmmakers to attend the American Film Institute Conservatory.
Created in partnership with Screen Australia and the Onbass Family Trust formed by former Village Roadshow Entertainment Group CEO Greg Basser and his wife Kiera O’Neill, the fellowships will provide two years full tuition and fees as well as some support for living expenses and flights from Australia.
The fellowships are presented in collaboration with G’Day USA, where White was introduced as the inaugural recipient at the 16th annual G’Day USA Los Angeles gala.
“The Screen Australia Onbass Fellowships have opened another door for Aussies looking to add to the ranks of filmmakers in the US market and beyond, and with the benefit of learning quite literally in Hollywood’s backyard on the AFI Campus,” said Basser, now CEO of the Gentle Giant Media Group.
The Newcastle-born White, who will enter the AFI program in the autumn, graduated with a degree in Media Arts and Production at the University of Technology, Sydney. She has since worked in Australia and overseas across a diverse range of digital and film projects.
She was the cinematographer on Remedy, a music video directed by Russell Crowe which won the Australian Cinematographers Society Silver (ACS) Silver Award. In 2017, she received the ACS Drew Llewelyn Camerimage Scholarship.
Applications for the second Screen Australia Onbass Fellowship in 2020 will be due this this October. For further information and application requirements go here
