QUT student’s short wins Avid grant

Avid has announced that Mr Pasquale Heredia, a third year student at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia, is the winner of the fifth round of the Avid Asia-Pacific Student Grant.

Mr Heredia won for his film titled Stargazing. Mr Heredia won a mobile studio consisting of Avid Media Composer on a HP Compaq Mobile Workstation and a Sony Digital HD Video Camera Recorder HVR-A1.

Stargazing is a one minute experimental clip portraying nature’s passing of time and encapsulated Mr Heredia’s passion for nature and animation. Developed for a university project, Mr Heredia combined a number of techniques to create his short film. The foreground was shot in the studio on a Sony camera, while the background plates were created in Photoshop and composited in After Effects. The clip was edited on Avid Xpress Pro.

“Effects laden and visually arresting, this piece showcases the creator’s expert grasp of compositing, editing, effects creation and sound design. This is certainly one of the most visually interesting and multi-layered pieces we have seen in the Avid Asia Pacific Student Grant Contest,” said the judging panel. “It is also heartening to see how various best-of-breed effects, compositing and editing applications are employed synergistically to create this highly impactful, polished final product. Especially impressive is the soundtrack, which further serves to reinforce the theme of the piece.”

Encouraged to enter by his lecturer at QUT, Mr Heredia took a “why not” approach, never thinking that he would be the winner. The Avid Asia Pacific Student Grant is the first competition Mr Heredia has entered.

“I am ecstatic about winning this grant and getting acknowledgment for all the work I put in to making the clip. This has really encouraged me to keep pursuing my passion. I would encourage all other students to enter the competition” says Mr Heredia.

The final round of the Avid Asia Pacific Student Grant contest will run until 31st July 2008. Students are encouraged to take this last opportunity to upload a 60 second clip to www.avid-asia.com/competitions.
