VFX supervisor turned writer-director Seth Larney will return to Australia to make his next film, dystopian thriller 2067, with the project having recently received production investment from Screen Australia, the South Australian Film Corporation and Create NSW.
Set in the not-too-distant future, with the Earth on the verge of collapse after humanity’s failure to reverse climate change, the film follows one man’s journey through time to save his dying world.
Larney made his feature directorial debut on Malaysian hit Tombiruo, after having worked in various behind-the-scenes roles on films such as Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, Superman Returns and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. 2067 will be produced by Larney’s long-time collaborator Lisa Shaunessy from Arcadia with Kojo’s Kate Croser. “As a director, my passion is in creating genre stories that are a fun and entertaining ride first and foremost,” said Larney.
“If we can then infuse that ride with themes that promote conversation about our relationships to each other and to our planet, then I cannot think of a better reason to make cinema. For me, these two layers are the power of sci-fi and I’m excited to have the opportunity to make these kinds of movies on home soil.”
Casting on 2067 is currently underway and will be announced shortly. Filming will commence in August, with the shoot to take place in regional NSW and at Adelaide Studios.
Larney will oversee the VFX, which will be supervised by Beijing-based VFX producer John Dietz from Bang Bang (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Terminator Salvation, X-Men Origins: Wolverine), with production design by Jacinta Leong’s (Pacific Rim: Uprising, Alien: Covenant, Mad Max: Fury Road).
Umbrella Entertainment will distribute the film in Australia, with international sales will be handled by Kew Media.
