Storm Surfers 3D Rides Wave of Success in a 46 Screen Live Event in Europe

PRESS RELEASE

The multi award winning 3D big wave movie Storm Surfers continues to win over audiences and garner praise around the world.

Over the weekend fans in Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Finland and Romania were treated to a live 3D satellite screening of Storm Surfers 3D which reached into six countries across 46 screens simultaneously. Sell out screenings in Germany led to additional screens being opened up moments before the live broadcast to accommodate the last minute rush of fans.

Storm Surfers 3D was honoured to be part of Red Bull Media House’s inaugural ‘Heroes by Nature’ movie night. Once a month, adrenalin freaks and film fans are treated to an ultimate action and adventure night where they can see the film and meet the cast.

The stars of Storm Surfers 3D, big wave surfer Ross Clarke Jones and two-time world champion Tom Carroll were on hand in Munster Germany to talk about their experiences and answer audience questions beamed in live from any one of the 46 screens.

But Ross and Tom nearly missed their moment on the red carpet….

The indomitable pair and life long friends chose to drive from Berlin to Munster in Ross’s 500 horsepower Porsche 911 Turbo that is housed in Germany to satiate his ‘need for speed’ and 3am trips down the autobahn.

Tom posed a shot on Instagram just an hour or so before the event showing Ross at the wheel and the speedometer max’d out at 305 km/hr. They promptly missed the correct autobahn turnoff and finally arrived with just minutes to spare before being mobbed by fans on the red carpet!

The ‘Heroes By Nature’ screening on the weekend heralds the start of more traditional theatrical release for Storm Surfers 3D in Spain, Portugal and Germany, with the film continuing to do well in Russia where it is currently out on 74 screens. Storm Surfers 3D is set for release in the UK next March and deals are close to being finalized in France and China.

Storm Surfers 3D is also now in its 16th week of theatrical distribution in the USA with a respectable $120,000 Box Office and a VOD figure that is closing in rapidly on the $100,000 mark.

The film won a string of awards including the prestigious 2012 Australian Academy Award (AACTA) for Best Feature Length Documentary and the 3D International Society Award for Best Documentary of 2012. In Australia it was a critical and box office success that placed it in the top 10 all-time releases for an Australian documentary clocking a total $1m + in box office and home video.

As well as the 3D movie the production team also created a 4 x 1hr 3D TV series for 3Net and Sky3D, a 20 part webisode series, e-book and iOS and Android game. Storm Surfers 3D is based on the successful Storm Surfers TV series originally made for Discovery Channel Asia.
