‘Sunny Nights’, ‘n00b’ selected for Berlinale Series Market

Will Forte, Trent O’Donnell, and D’Arcy Carden.

Australian-US co-production Sunny Nights and New Zealand comedy n00b will be previewed at next month’s Berlinale Series Market as part of the Selects strand.

Produced by Jungle Entertainment and Echo Lake Entertainment in association with Cineflix Rights, Sunny Nights stars Will Forte and D’Arcy Carden as siblings who venture to Sydney determined to start their spray tan business. However, when they get caught up in the city’s criminal underworld, they must figure out how to stay alive, out of prison, and in the black.

The ensemble cast includes Rachel House, Jessica De Gouw, Megan Wilding, Ra Chapman, Miritana Hughes, George Mason, Matuse, and former professional rugby league footballer Willie Mason in his debut role.

Nick Keetch and Ty Freer created the series and wrote the episodes with Marieke Hardy, Lally Katz, Clare Sladden, and Niki Aken. Trent O’Donnell serves as executive producer and director, with Bridget Callow-Wright producing. The series has major production investment from Stan and Screen Australia and is financed with support from Screen NSW through the Made in NSW Fund, and exclusive worldwide distribution partner Cineflix Rights.

Great Southern Television’s n00b picks up with high school king and party animal Nikau (Max Crean) facing a social downfall, from popular to outcast. Joining other misfits, he discovers a new world online. The cast includes Jaxson Cook, Shervonne Grierson, James Sexton, and Felicia To’a. Victoria Boult and Rachel Fawcett created the six-part series, with the former directing with Josh Frizzell.

Sunny Nights and n00b are among 17 global titles in the showcase for the market, set to take place February 16-19, alongside the European Film Market.

Australia has representation in the Berlinale film line-up, with Swiss-born Australian composer siblings Diego, Nora, and Lionel Baldenweg contributing the score for Lionel Baier’s in-competition selection La cache (The Safe House). Featuring the final performance of late French actor Michel Blanc, the story follows a nine-year-old boy who stays with his grandparents and uncles while his parents participate in the May 1968 protests in Paris. When an illustrious guest seeks refuge in the apartment, the family’s dynamics change.

It comes after Curio Pictures series The Narrow Road to the Deep North, starring Jacob Elordi, was selected for the Berlinale Specials showcase last week.

The 2025 Berlin International Film Festival will be held from February 13 -23. Find more information about the line-up here.
