Curio Pictures series The Narrow Road to the Deep North will premiere at next month’s Berlinale ahead of its release on Prime Video in April.
The adaptation of Richard Flanagan’s 2014 Man Booker prize-winning novel is among eight new titles selected for the Berlinale Specials showcase, joining Bong Joon Ho’s highly anticipated new film Mickey 17, along with works from Canada, France, Belgium, the UK, Germany, and South Korea. It will be screened as part of the Berlinale Special Series Gala in Berlin.
Written by Shaun Grant and directed by Justin Kurzel, the five-part drama stars Jacob Elordi as Lieutenant-Colonel Dorrigo Evans, whose all-too-brief love affair with his uncle Keith’s (Simon Baker) young wife Amy Mulvaney (Odessa Young) shaped his life.
Ciarán Hinds plays the older Dorrigo in the 1980s, while Olivia DeJonge is the younger Ella, and Heather Mitchell her older counterpart. The cast also includes Thomas Weatherall as Frank Gardiner, Show Kasamatsu as Major Nakamura, and Charles An as The Goanna.
Grant and Kurzel executive produced the series alongside Flanagan, and Curio Pictures’ Porter and Rachel Gardner, with Alexandra Taussig producing. Screen Australia provided principal production funding, with assistance via Screen NSW’s Made in NSW and PDV Funds. Sony Pictures Television is handling international distribution.
The Berlinale selection comes as Prime Video confirmed it will launch the series, filmed across five months in New South Wales in 2023/24, in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada on April 18.
The 2025 Berlin International Film Festival will be held from February 13 -23. The full Berlinale Specials program will be announced on January 21. Find more information about the initial line-up here.
