Australian/Laotian co-production, The Rocket, which was released in Australia last August is set to be released in UK cinemas from the 14th of March.
The Rocket tells the story of a ten-year old Lao boy called Ahlo, who is believed to bring bad luck and is blamed for a string of disasters. When his family loses their home and is forced to move, Ahlo leads them through a land scarred by war in search of a new home. Also coming along on the search are Kia, a spirited nine-year-old orphan and her eccentric uncle, Purple: an ex-soldier with a purple suit, a rice-wine habit and a fetish for James Brown.
In a final effort to try and prove he’s not cursed, Ahlo builds a giant, explosive rocket to enter into the most lucrative but dangerous competition of the year – the Rocket Festival.
One of the first feature films for international release set and shot in the intriguing country of Laos, The Rocket has remarkable access to real rituals and festivities in the stunning mountains of the country, offering a unique view into a world never before seen on film.
The Rocket won major awards at Berlin International Film Festival and Tribeca Film Festival including ‘Best Narrative Feature’, ‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Debut Feature’. It has then gone on to win over 40 international awards and has received much critical acclaim.
