The restraining order Amber Heard has taken out against husband Johnny Depp doesn't seem to have dampened enthusiasm (at least locally) for his latest movie, Alice Through The Looking Glass, with the sequel to 2010's Alice in Wonderland narrowly beating Fox's X-Men: Apocalypse at the Australian box office over the weekend.
Again starring Depp and Mia Masikowska but this time directed by James Bobin rather than Tim Burton, the film debuted on 278 screens and rang up $2.9 million over the weekend, while Apocalypse, on approximately the same number of screens in its second week, took around $50,000 less after dropping fifty-five percent.
Bryan Singer's fourth X-Men film has now made $10.8 million overall at the local B.O.
Coming in third was Shane Black's The Nice Guys, starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, which pulled in $1.9 million from 246 screens.
Sony's The Angry Birds Movie was next best, dropping thirty-five percent in its third week to notch $1.2 million over the weekend, bringing its cume to $6.6 million.
Debuting in fifth spot was Madman's Hunt for the Wilderpeople, directed by Boy's Taika Waititi and starring Sam Neill, which racked up $1.1 million from 114 screens and boasts a per-location average of $9,682 (better than both The Nice Guys and The Angry Birds Movie).
Captain America: Civil War and Bad Neighbours 2 both dropped fifty-three percent, with Civil War now sitting on $32.5 million after five weeks and Bad Neighbours 2 on $7.1 after four.
Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book rang up $319,559 over the weekend and has now made $29.1 million after seven weeks, while eOne's Florence Foster Jenkins has made $3.1 after four.
Paramount's Whiskey Tango Foxtrot has also been middling, with just over $2 million in three weeks and a sixty-percent dropoff this weekend despite the combined star power of Margot Robbie and Tina Fey.
As for local releases, Matthew Saville's A Month of Sundays has made $689,958 in five weeks and is currently on 46 screens, while Transmission's Sherpa looks set to crack $1.2 million in the next week and is still on 37 screens after nine weeks.
