See-Saw Films’ latest production, Shame, has racked up seven nominations at the British Independent Film Awards.
The film, which is set for a February 9, 2012, local release through Transmission, leads the nominations along with Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Tyrannosaur which also both received seven nods.
Directed by award-winner Steve McQueen (Hunger), Shame will battle it out for the coveted Best British Independent Film award, going head to head with Senna, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Tyrannosaur and We Need To Talk About Kevin.
Other nominations include: Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Technical Achievement (for both Cinematography and Editing). The announcement follows the film taking out two awards at the Venice International Film Festival for Best Film and Best Actor (Michael Fassbender).
See-Saw, headed by Sydney producer Emile Sherman and London-based Iain Canning, will be looking for a similar result to last year when their most world-renowned film The King’s Speech won five gongs at the Awards (from eight nominations). The historical drama then went on to win four Oscars (including for Best Picture and Best Director). The production company was contacted by IF for a comment.
Shame, which will be distributed in the US by Fox Searchlight, tells the story of Brandon (Fassbender), who lives in New York balancing a busy job and active social life. When the wayward Sissy (Carey Mulligan), turns up at his apartment unannounced, Brandon’s carefully managed lifestyle spirals out of control. Watch the trailer here.
Meanwhile, David Michôd's debut feature Animal Kingdom, which raked in $5 million at the Australian Box Office last year, has been nominated for Best Foreign Independent Film. The crime thriller opened in the UK in February this year.
And Australian actress Mia Wasikowska (Alice In Wonderland) was nominated for Best Actress for her work on romantic-drama Jane Eyre.
The British Independent Film Awards will be held on December 4.
