PRESS RELEASE
Studio’s work on the film’s Quicksilver “Kitchen” scene also nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award.
Adelaide, South Australia—5 February 2015—Rising Sun Pictures (RSP) artists were honoured with two awards last night at the 13th Annual Visual Effects Society Awards in Los Angeles. CG Supervisor Dennis Jones won the VES Award for Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a Photoreal/Live Action Motion Media Project for work on the film X-Men: Days of Future Past. He shared the award with Previsualization Supervisor Austin Bonang, Virtual Production Supervisor Casey Schatz and Cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel.
RSP Shot Supervisor Adam Paschke, FX Lead Premamurti Paetsch, Effects Artist Sam Hancock and Effects Technical Director Timmy Lundin won for Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture also for X-Men: Days of Future Past.
X-Men: Days of Future Past also was nominated for one of the VES Awards’ most coveted honours, Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture.
RSP artists were involved in creating the film’s exuberant “Kitchen” scene where time appears to stand still as the speedy Quicksilver darts about the Pentagon cafeteria to foil guards attacking a group of mutants.
The scene involved an intricate blend of live action, computer-generated objects and visual effects. RSP collaborated with VFX Supervisor Richard Stammers and Director Bryan Singer to bring the scene to life through the production of scores of CG props, including frying pans, knives, pots of boiling soup, carrots and bullets, as well as the omnipresent cascades of water droplets. Each of these elements needed to be rendered in near microscopic detail, placed precisely within the geometry of the kitchen and choreographed to move and react realistically to lighting, other objects and characters.
“The two VES Awards represent a team effort of many months and scores of talented artists and technicians,” said RSP Executive Producer Tony Clark. “Everyone at RSP is incredibly proud. The complex and highly detailed work on that sequence is a culmination of over 20 years of experience in crafting visual effects for our clients, and it's something we are continuing in our current work on Pan, Tarzan and Gods of Egypt.”
Rising Sun Pictures artists are also nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award for X-Men: Days of Future Past.
