Brisbane Queer Film Festival celebrates diversity

Queensland’s foremost celebration of queer cinema kicked off on Friday with an opening night gala screening of short film competition finalists and an after party starring Scissors Sisters’ DJ, Sammy Jo.
Proudly supported by the Pacific Film and Television Commission (PFTC) and the iconic Brisbane Powerhouse, the Brisbane Queer Film Festival (BQFF) exclusively showcases cinema by, about and for the queer community.
Anne Demy-Geroe, Executive Director of PFTC’s Festivals and Events Unit, feels the BQFF, now in its eighth year, has become a significant cultural event.

“The Brisbane Queer Film Festival is an important festival – it provides a unique cinematic experience whereby diversity is celebrated through brave programming choices,” Ms Demy-Geroe said.

“Quirky shorts, entertaining features and thought-provoking documentaries from around the world, which would otherwise not be accessible through mainstream avenues, have the chance to find their audience at this festival.”

“PFTC has been a major sponsor of BQFF from it’s inception as part of our commitment to enhancing Queensland‘s reputation as a hub for interesting cinema.”

“The BQFF, in conjunction with the St.George Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) and other screen events throughout the state, delivers diverse quality local and international content and encourages the development of informed and critical audiences.”

One particular program highlight is French HIV drama Avant Que J’Oublie (Before I Forget) from acclaimed writer/actor/director Jacques Nolot, which was part of the official selection for both the 2008 Toronto International and Cannes Film Festivals.

Local filmmakers are encouraged to submit their work to the BQFF for the chance to win $1000 worth of filmmaking facilities, donated by Queensland‘s screen resource centre, QPIX.
