Following on from their phenomenally successful Saucers under the Stars film event at Penrith Regional Gallery in January 2008, film buffs Jay Katz and Miss Death from FBI FM’s Naked City (aka Jaimie and Aspasia Leonarder) have curated a juicy program of film nights inspired by the gallery’s 2008 exhibition program.
Each film evening will be a smorgasbord of rare shorts and documentaries presented by Jay Katz and Miss Death, often with a smidgeon of vigorous discussion. Viewers will recline under the stars in the aromatic garden or, in the event of inclement weather, get amongst the works of art in the gallery.
On June 21, the exhibition MAN – depicting contemporary masculinity will be enlivened by the film evening Buffed, ripped and torn – Blokes to Beefcake. The night will be a cinematic peek at the male of the species as he has been depicted in art and film from Michelangelo’s David to Steve Reeves in the iconic sword and sandal film Hercules.
On 2 August, the children’s art exhibition Operation Art and the graf artist Haro are the points of departure for the screening Delinquents!!, a filmic history of the controversy surrounding urban art expressions and a selection of archival – now comedic- educational films about delinquency and its collision with the authorities.
During the Strictly Samoan festival, Adventures in Paradise, to be screened on 20 September will showcase South Sea Island travelogues and ethnographic films from the 1950s to 1970s. Classic footage of the South Sea Islands as exotic tourist locations to transport you from your mundane existence to an island paradise.
Sydney Ball – the colour paintings celebrates an Australian artist who enjoyed the rare distinction of major US success, consequently, 22 November the 45th anniversary of JFK’s death will be marked by Who Killed Kennedy?? Featuring a rare screening of the early 1970s Italian documentary The Two Kennedys on 16mm.
