The Bra Boys are celebrating as international recognition for their film continues to grow following their win for Best Documentary at the Surfer Poll & Video Awards. The Film also won ‘Worst Wipeout’ for Richie Vas, with Koby Abberton receiving a nomination for Best Tube Ride.
Bra Boys is the highest grossing Australian Documentary ever taking in more then $1.6 million at the Box Office and has sold over 25,000 DVD units since coming out in August.
Announcers commented on the award for best documentary – ‘Murder, courtroom drama, and the underbelly of inner city life set against a backdrop of heart-pounding surf. Toss in street fighting, a few heavy wipeouts, a couple moments to tug at the heartstrings and you’ve got a documentary that watches like it was written in Hollywood.’ And on Richie Vas’ wipeout – ‘When a guy’s caught on tape taking a doughnut over dry rocks, then gets speared with his board and comes in with a bloody hole in his neck that looks more like a ragged tracheotomy than a wipeout wound, it makes the decision easy.’
The 35th Annual Surfer Poll & Video Awards was held on 11 September at The Grove of Anahiem and hosted by Sal Masekela and Bneji Weatherly. Saturated with a medley of professional surfers and important surf-industry personnel, the invitation-only event was, in the words of eight-time world champ and 2007 Surfer Poll winner Kelly Slater, ‘“…the best event put together in surfing.’
