Debut filmmaker receives honourable mention at Idyllwild

Richard Wilkins and the cast.

Filmmaker Jed Malone’s debut film The 33rd Wedding has won an Honourable Mention for Feature Film at the Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema in California.

Malone, who produced and directed, worked in TV comedy and theatre prior to film, and was nominated for the Mary Austin Award for Best Producer.

"I’m thrilled to be part of this emerging wave of female storytellers", Malone said, "and I can’t wait to do it again."

The no-budget feature shot in Bondi has a cast which includes Home and Away's Gary Brun, Crownies' Christine Callinan and Richard Wilkins in his first feature film gig.

"Richard played the part of a celebrity wedding celebrant, and he was a natural. All those years of hanging out at the Academy Awards really shows!"

The 33rd Wedding was also nominated for Best Editing, Best Ensemble Cast and the Independent Spirit Award.

"We made it for about 25K Australian, so the nominations are real credit to the whole team, including all those who held booms, ironed costumes and made sandwiches. Truly, the sandwiches were amazing. In an ideal world, we would have also been up for Best Sandwiches."
