Cinematographer Greig Fraser will add another accolade to his decorated career next month with the AACTA Byron Kennedy Award.

AACTA announced the Academy Award winner would receive the $10,000 prize, named in honour of George Miller’s filmmaking partner and Mad Max co-creator Byron Kennedy, at next month’s AACTA Awards ceremony on the Gold Coast on February 7.

The jury-determined award is in recognition of his “extraordinary contributions to the screen industry, his pioneering use of technology, and his distinct visual style that has redefined cinematic experiences worldwide”.

It comes nearly two years after Fraser won an Oscar and BAFTA for his work on Denis Villeneuve’s Dune. He may yet receive further recognition for last year’s sequel when this year’s Academy Award nominations are announced on January 23 (US time).

He has also received an Emmy Award for the Disney+ series The Mandalorian, and has made memorable to contributions Zero Dark Thirty, The Batman, and Lion, among many others.

Miller said Fraser was the latest in the succession of eminent Australian cinematographers who had made their mark on world cinema.

“He is dauntless in his embrace of new technologies in the cause of his art and consistently brings a narratively powerful aesthetic to the work,” he said.

In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, Fraser said it was an “incredible honour” to receive the award.

“My job is to stay in the shadows, put my head down, my bum up, and make myself invisible but make my work stand out,” he told the publication.

“I’m going to be accepting with [great] gratitude.”

Guests will have the chance to go behind the scenes of Fraser’s career with an exclusive deconstruction of some of his most acclaimed work at the upcoming AACTA Festival, held at HOTA, Home of the Arts, from February 5 – 9.

This year’s AACTA Awards Industry Gala will be held on Wednesday, February 5 ahead of the AACTA Award Ceremony on Friday, February 7. Both ceremonies will be held at HOTA.
