Not Quite Hollywood to get national release

Madman Cinema is delighted to announce that Mark Hartley’s debut feature, Not Quite Hollywood has been selected as the opening night film of the Melbourne International Film Festival. This will be the World Premiere screening of the highly anticipated feature which opens nationally on August 28.

Not Quite Hollywood is the wild, wonderful, untold story of “OZploitation” films. It irreverently documents an era when Australian cinema got its gear off and showed the world a full-frontal explosion of sex, violence, horror and foot-to-the-floor, full bore action!

Full of outrageous anecdotes, a large cast of local and international names and a genuine, infectious love of Australian movies, it’s the first feature by Mark Hartley who has officially been researching Not Quite Hollywood for the past ten years, but has basically spent a lifetime watching, studying, researching and enjoying Aussie genre films.

A delighted Hartley said “It’s playfully ironic that a doco on a bunch of maverick Aussie filmmakers – who never in their wildest dreams imagined their films playing in any festival – has been honoured with the opening night spot. I sincerely thank MIFF and hope this screening further helps to shine a long deserved spotlight on some truly under-appreciated home-grown genre auteurs!”

Madman Cinema has been involved with Not Quite Hollywood since February 2006, securing international presales in Berlin, in February ‘07 to Optimum, UK and Magnolia, USA (at that point in time film was going into its fourth consecutive pitch to local funding bodies!) and creating all the motion graphics and title treatment in-house.

Madman MD and the film’s Co- Executive Producer, Paul Wiegard, describes Not Quite Hollywood as “an all consuming, impassioned project from the outset. It couldn’t be any other way.”

“Filmmaker Mark Hartley not only nails the maverick 1970’s spirit of those extraordinary trailblazers, but exuberantly re-energises that ‘screw it, let’s do it’ ethos’ in the most wildly entertaining way. Bring on MIFF opening night & buckle up from August 28th for the Australia-wide release!”

Not Quite Hollywood will open nationally on August 28.
