Screen Australia opens $400,000 worth of funding for Indigenous filmmakers

Screen Australia will provide up to $400,000 funding as part of The Next Step Indigenous Screen Business Fellowship.

The funding is a targeted initiative for production companies run by Indigenous screen practitioners who are ready to take the next step in their careers. 

The funding has been allocated over a two-year period to help businesses grow their public and professional profile and attract ongoing projects.

The program is specifically for those who have some track record in initiating and producing successful projects and have a vision for their future, but are not yet at the stage where they can apply for Screen Australia Enterprise Funding.

The fellowship will provide successful applicants with base funding to enable them to focus on achieving identified business development objectives.

These include consolidating or expanding the scale and ambition of their production activity; increasing opportunities for slate development diversifying their range of business activities;consolidating business structure and personnel; developing new business alliances, industry and marketplace relationships.

Screen Australia investment development manager, Indigenous Department, said it was an exciting opportunity for Indigenous screen practitioners.

“The Next Step Indigenous Screen Business Fellowship is the first enterprise fund created specifically for Indigenous screen practitioners," he said. 

"The Indigenous screen industry is already vibrant and innovative, and we hope that these injections of funding can help people dream big and take the necessary steps to achieving their vision for their company.”

Applications for The Next Step Indigenous Screen Business Fellowship open on February 5 and close on April 1. There will only be one round of applications this year.
