A delegation of leading independent documentary producers will meet with members of the Government today, Monday June 16 ahead of a screening this evening at the Parliamentary Theatrette of the new film The Burning Season.
The Burning Season is about the environmental impact of deforestation in Indonesia and one man’s efforts to pull off a major carbon trading deal that could redefine the value of the world’s forests and reduce global carbon emissions. It could also save the orangutan from extinction. .
The group of Australian documentary producers will be in Canberra to promote an awareness and appreciation of the quality work of independent documentaries in this country.
Geoff Brown, Executive Director of the Screen Producers Association of Australia, said: “Australia has many fine documentary producers running their own independent businesses and who sell their films to broadcasters in Australia and internationally. They are creative, they are tenacious and their work is world class.
“They include The Burning Season producers, Cathy Henkel and Jeff Canin from Hatchling Productions, whose earlier works includes the Spike Milligan biography I Told You I Was Ill, The Life and Legacy of Spike Milligan and The Man Who Stole My Mother’s Face, and Eva Orner who won this year’s Academy Award for the film Taxi To The Dark Side.”
As well as screening on the ABC later this year, The Burning Season has an international distribution deal with National Geographic and confirmed sales to the BBC and CBC. It is also expected to be released in cinemas.
