Press Release
Madman proudly presents the year’s most talked about documentary, THE IMPOSTER – available on DVD and Digital Download from 17 July, 2013.
A remarkable and chilling true story, The Imposter is the story of the disappearance of Nicholas Barclay, his grieving family and friends’ reaction upon his unexpected return and the authorities who began to question where truth ends and fiction begins.
In 1994, 13-year-old Nicholas Barclay disappeared without a trace from his home in San Antonio, Texas. Three and a half years later it is reported that he has been found alive, albeit thousands of miles away in a village in southern Spain and burdened by a mysterious and harrowing story of kidnap and torture.
As Nicholas settles back into a normal life in San Antonio, some of those around him begin to suspect there is something out of place. Nicholas looks remarkably different; he appears almost certainly older than his 16 years and now carries a strange accent, which there is only a vague explanation for.
But most significantly, Nicholas’ family does not seem to acknowledge these inconsistencies. It is only when both the police and private investigator, Charlie Parker, start asking questions that this strange tale takes a jaw-dropping turn.
With a 95% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Imposter is one of the year’s most acclaimed documentaries – and has received wide praise from audiences and critics alike, with the Australian theatrical release garnering in excess of $165,000 at the box office.
