WA filmmakers are finalists in US short film contest

A Western Australian short film has been selected in the top 15 of an American short film contest, with its makers now receiving US$10,000 to make another film for the final round.

Local director/producer Maziar Lahooti and producer/writer Michael Hoath entered their short film Sprawl into the inaugural Doorpost Film Project, a contest for digital short films no longer than five minutes in length. Submitted films must fall into one of seven concept categories: Love, Freedom, Pain, Energy, Redemption, Greed or Forgiveness.

Sprawl is a tale of expansionism and corporate greed, which follows three men in suits who travel down a highway as the seed of large industry is planted.

As one of the top 15 films, Maziar and Michael have now been given $10,000 US to make a second round film 8 to15 minutes long on the topic of ‘Hope’.  Maziar, who won the Young Filmmaker of the Year Award in the Early Career section at this years’ Western Australian Screen Awards (WASA), is currently in Nashville attending the awards ceremony and collecting their prize cheque.

When he returns, the pair will get down to working on their final film, which must be submitted by August 15.  It will then debut on The Doorpost Film Project website August 17-31.

Final round voting will take place September 1-10 with the competition culminating in Nashville, Tennessee on September 10-13, with a showing of selected short films, awards presentations and a training symposium.

ScreenOnline congratulates Maziar and Michael on this accolade and wishes them well with the production of their final film.

If your film has been accepted into a film festival or competition we would love to hear about it and include the information in ScreenOnline.
