Press release from SAFC

The South Australian Film Corporation congratulates all of the 2009 AFI award winners, in what is being hailed as a landmark year for Australian cinema.

South Australian invested films won a total of 13 awards including the highly acclaimed Samson And Delilah, which won a total of seven awards, but also productions generated by local filmmakers such as Cat Piano, Figaro Pho, and Scott Hicks’ documentary Glass, demonstrating the incredible energy and diversity in the local South Australian film industry.

“The South Australian Film Corporation has a wonderful history in recent times at the AFIs, and this has been demonstrated again by the number of nominations garnered by films that we supported over the past eighteen months” said  CEO of the SAFC, Richard Harris. “This year it is particularly gratifying to see the strength of South Australian generated projects, with emerging players such as the People’s Republic of Animation (Cat Piano) and Luke Jurevicious (Figaro Pho) continuing to gain the plaudits for their great animation work, while Scott Hicks gets the recognition he deserves for his wonderful documentary about Philip Glass”.

The South Australian Film Corporation is proud to have supported 10 films nominated for awards this year, which attracted a combined total of 26 nominations. These include Beautiful Kate which won Best Supporting Actress and scored 11 other nominations including Best Film and, Best Director, Last Ride with 3 nominations and My Year Without Sex with 2 nominations.

South Australia continues to be the talk of the Australian film industry – with the successful filmmaking initiative FilmLab, a wealth of new SA talent kicking goals nationally and internationally, as well as the world recognized BigPond Adelaide Film Festival, and its affordable state-of-the-art production and post-production facilities about to commence construction in the new year.

The South Australian Film Corporation is extremely proud of the role that it played in the current film renaissance and looks forward to continuing to set the benchmark in film investment and production with a strong slate of productions confirmed to shoot in the new year.
