‘Top of the Lake: China Girl’.
Aussie acting talent have made a strong showing among the 2018 Golden Globe nominees, while See Saw Films’ Top of the Lake: China Girl will vie for Best Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
The Sydney-set series, created, written and directed by Jane Campion with co-writer Gerard Lee, will compete against Big Little Lies, Fargo, Feud: Bette And Joan and The Sinner.
Margot Robbie’s titular performance as disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya has earned her a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. It is a strong category that will see Robbie vie against Judi Dench (Victoria & Abdul), Helen Mirren (The Leisure Seeker), Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) and Emma Stone (Battle of the Sexes). The actress is also a producer of the biopic with Tom Ackerley, Steven Rogers and Bryan Unkeless, so could potentially also walk away with the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy gong.
Musical drama The Greatest Showman, which will be released in Australia on Boxing Day, sees Hugh Jackman up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. He is up against Steve Carrell (Battle of the Sexes), Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver), James Franco (The Disaster Artist) and Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out).
Nicole Kidman’s performance in Big Little Lies, a HBO drama series based on the book of the same name by Sydney-based author by Liane Moriarty, has scored her a nod for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television, up against castmate Reese Witherspoon. Kidman is also an executive producer of the show alongside fellow Aussie Bruna Papandrea.
Perth’s Katherine Langford has snared a nod for Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series – Drama for her lead role in controversial Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.
Geoffrey Rush has also been nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television for his outing as Albert Einstein in Genius.
The Golden Globes will be held January 7, 2018.
