Press release from Ned & Co Marketing and Publicity
In what promises to be a standout show for 2011, MOVIE EXTRA today announced that filming is due to commence on SMALL TIME GANGSTER, a new eight-part series to be shot entirely on location in Melbourne over seven weeks from 18 October, 2010.
Wickedly funny and totally addictive, SMALL TIME GANGSTER follows the journey of Tony Piccolo, an average Aussie bloke who works hard to support his wife and two kids. They think he’s a whizz at cleaning carpets – but Tony’s real profession, as a brutal standover man, takes ‘cleaning’ to a whole new level. When his two worlds collide, he’s going to need a damn sight more than cleaning fluid to clear up the mess.
The team behind SMALL TIME GANGSTER have assembled a dynamic cast to bring Tony and his two ‘families’ to life, including Steve Le Marquand (BENEATH HILL 60, LAST TRAIN TO FREO) as Tony, Sacha Horler (MY YEAR WITHOUT SEX, PRAISE), as his gutsy wife Cathy, plus Gia Carides (MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME), Gary Sweet (COPS LAC, THE PACIFIC), Geoff Morrell, (CLOUD STREET, BASTARD BOYS), Jared Daperis (PLAYING FOR CHARLIE), Samuel Johnson (RUSH, THE SECRET LIFE OF US) and many more.
“MOVIE EXTRA has un-earthed another comedy first for Australian television in SMALL TIME GANGSTER,” said Peter Jenetsky, the Movie Network’s General Manager Content Strategy and Marketing. “We’ve all seen crime shows before, but never with such a black, and at times surreal, slant. With SMALL TIME GANGSTER, we’ve taken the genre and given it a fresh perspective heightened by a healthy dose of laconic Aussie humour and truly colourful characters that we’re confident Subscription TV audiences will love as much as we do.”
Written and created by Gareth Calverley (SPY SHOP) and Joss King (H2O), SMALL TIME GANGSTER will be directed by Jeffrey Walker whose credits include ANGRY BOYS, (the new Chris Lilley comedy series for HBO), RAKE, DANCE ACADEMY and CITY HOMICIDE.
The series is a first for Boilermaker-Burberry Entertainment – a new company formed by the show’s Executive Producer, industry veteran Ewan Burnett of Burberry Entertainment (LAST MAN STANDING, DEAD GORGEOUS), and Producers Andrew McInally and Gareth Calverley of Boilermaker, producers of THE TEAM for Foxtel’s Comedy Channel and ANDREW'S GUIDE and SPY SHOP for ABC Comedy. Emma Moroney will be Supervising Producer for MOVIE EXTRA.
SMALL TIME GANGSTER will air on MOVIE EXTRA in the first half of 2011.
