Bondi Short Film Festival comes to a close

The past weekend saw Sydney cinephiles hit the beach for the tenth annual Bondi Short Film Festival. With the 14 finalist films screened from over 250 entries, patrons were treated to a delectable selection of films against the ultimate Sydney backdrop of Bondi Beach.

Following three sold out sessions, The Chaser’s Chris Taylor hosted a ceremony where the filmmakers were presented with their awards for the evening.

As judged by the panel of industry experts, screenplay writer Anna-Maria Monticelli (DISGRACE starring JOHN MALKOVICH), young up and coming actress Krew Boylan (FOUR, DREAM THE LIFE), film critic Marc Fennell (TRIPLE J), director Gregor Jordan (BUFFALO SOLDIERS, TWO HANDS), and creator of the YouTube short film phenomenon (BEACHED AZ) Nick Boshier, the award winning films were as follows:

THE SHOWTIME MOVIE CHANNELS ‘BEST FILM’

‘Happenstance’ – Directed by John Marsh

Jilted, depressed and alone, Grey is a young woman lost beyond hope. She makes a life-ending decision on Valentine’s Day, when a hapless singing bear-o-gram changes the course of events.

‘Pop’ – Directed by Tobias Andersson

A young boy reluctantly joins his father on a rabbit hunt deep in the snowy mountains. When the boy disturbs the silence with the popping of his bubble gum, their relationship is put to the test.

A young man with a disability brings a girl home for the first time.

THE COADY GROUP ‘BEST MUSIC’

‘MAD’ – Directed by Meryl Tankard

By using her own words and poetry, this short documentary explores the personality and work of writer Sandy Jeffs. Diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 24, Sandy is haunted by internal voices. As Sandy says, “We may never know what makes us mad but we can seek to understand what makes us well.”

‘Zero’ – Directed by Christopher Kezelos

THE BARON’S PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD
