Rialto Distribution acquires classic love story

Rialto Distribution is pleased to announce the acquisition of the film adaptation of Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel Garcia Márquez’s novel Love in the Time of Cholera.

In a deal negotiated with President of Summit International David Garrett and Rialto Distribution CEO Kelly Rogers, the film will be released in cinemas nationally in Australia in early 2008.

Spanning a half century in the complex and sensual city of Cartagena, Colombia, Love in the Time of Cholera is a sweeping romantic epic, that recounts the story of a man who waits over fifty years for his one true love. Directed by Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral), Love in the Time of Cholera stars Academy Award nominee Javier Bardem (Before Night Falls, Collateral), Benjamin Bratt (Traffic) and John Leguizamo (Moulin Rogue).

The acquisition tops off a successful year for Rialto, with As it is in Heaven playing for a record 67 consecutive weeks and box office hit Amazing Grace grossing more than $6.5 million to date in Australia and New Zealand. Kelly Rogers said he was excited to be adding Love in the Time of Cholera to a catalogue of acclaimed films.

‘We are extremely excited about this latest acquisition,’ Kelly Rogers said. ‘At the heart of the film is a beautiful and timeless love story. Waiting for over 50 years for the one you love is such a romantic notion, this is a classic film in the vein of The English Patient and its appeal will be timeless.’

David Garrett said, ‘I am delighted to be continuing our relationship with Rialto who are proving to be a formidable force in the Australian distribution landscape.’
