Colourful Florence Broadhurst portrait screens on SBS

Gillian Armstrong’s award-winning documentary Unfolding Florence – The Many Lives of Florence Broadhurst will have its television premiere on SBS at 9pm on Sunday 18th November.

The Film Australia/Becker Entertainment production tells the story of flamboyant Australian design pioneer and wallpaper entrepreneur Florence Broadhurst whose brutal murder in 1977 has never been solved.

The feature-length documentary received worldwide acclaim following selection for the Sundance, Montreal, Karlovy Vary, Valladolid and Sheffield Film Festivals while, closer to home, writer Katherine Thomson’s script won a Queensland Premier’s Literary Award and Australian Writers’ Guild Award.

Unfolding Florence was also a success story at the box office. Following its 2006 national cinema release by Dendy Films it remains in the top three grossing theatrical releases ever for a non-IMAX Australian documentary.

Unfolding Florence is an artistic tour de force and I am delighted that this documentary will be available for all Australians to enjoy when it airs on SBS this weekend,’ said Film Australia CEO Daryl Karp.

‘Gillian Armstrong and her creative team have captured Broadhurst’s story and genius in an evocative and inventive way – it is an extraordinarily spirited and colourful Australian documentary and we are proud to have commissioned it,’ said SBS Independent General Manager Ned Lander.

Unfolding Florence is a Film Australia/Becker Entertainment Production produced in association with the NSW Film and Television Office and SBS Independent. Director: Gillian Armstrong.
