‘Nekrotronic.’
Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner’s sci-fi action-comedy Nekrotronic (formerly Nekromancer) will have its world premiere in the Midnight Madness section of the Toronto International Film Festival.
The brothers’ follow-up to Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead is one of 10 titles in Midnight Madness, the late-night showcase of genre films from around the world.
Produced by Andrew Mason and Troy Lum for Hopscotch Features and Tristan Roache-Turner for Guerilla Films, the film stars Monica Bellucci, Ben O’Toole, Caroline Ford, Tess Haubrich, Bob Savea and David Wenham.
Directed by Kiah and scripted by both brothers, the plot follows Bellucci as Finnegan, the world’s greatest demon-hunting Nekromancer turned bad. She is the first to discover evil spirits inside the Internet, taking the mythical battle between good and evil into the digital realm.
Years later, down-on-his-luck sewerage-waste worker Howard North (O’Toole) and Nekromancer sisters Molly (Ford) and Torquel (Haubrich) must destroy the plague of online demons and defeat Finnegan before she can devour the souls of a million human beings who are addicted to their phones.
The filmmakers describe the film as a mind-bending, genre-mashing, sci-fi action-packed comedy – funny, scary, thrilling and high octane, a cinematic roller-coaster which traverses the full spectrum of human and inhuman emotion.
The brothers said: “We grew up watching John Carpenter and Sam Raimi films and reading insane sci-fi comic books. Nekrotronic has taken those elements and blended them together in a giant cinematic meatgrinder. We are beyond stoked to unleash this movie into the world and share our vision with genre-loving eyeballs everywhere.”
Entertainment One will launch the film, which was co-funded by Screen Australia and Create NSW, next year. Sierra/Affinity is handling worldwide sales.
Midnight Madness will open with the world premiere of Shane Black’s The Predator, the director’s reinvention of the cult film franchise which stars Yvonne Strahovski, Olivia Munn and Jacob Tremblay.
The line-up will also feature the world premiere of Halloween, directed by David Gordon Green and starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Judy Greer.
It will close with the North American premiere of Diamantino, Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt’s bizarre, genre-bending film which launched at Cannes earlier this year.
The Toronto International Film Festival runs September 6-16.
