Election result: Dismay and a few cheers

Screen industry figures took to social media on Saturday night, most lamenting the election result.

The negative responses continued on Sunday although, to be fair, the Coalition’s victory was warmly welcomed in some circles.

Here’s a sample of Facebook postings:

Julie Marlow: A rotten week; a friend died way too soon, an emotional funeral and now this debacle of an election.

Angie Fielder: Despite the polls, I can't believe it's happening, I can't believe someone like Tony Abbott could be elected to lead our country.

Polly Staniford Seager: Soooooo depressing! Can't even bear to read/watch the news.

John L Simpson: Sad, not the Australia that's in my heart.

Stephen Lance: I can't watch.

Matilda Brown: How did we go from Julia to Tony? This is horrible.

Steve Saragossi: Australia, what the hell have you just done?

Stephen Sewell : I just woke up this morning after a terrible dream that…AAAAGGGGGHHHH!!! IT'S TRUE!!!

And this from Coalition supporters:

Phil Avalon: It was a shoe in…..The Libs had to win.

Prue MacSween: How sweet it is. But how delusional are the Labor mouthpieces offering every excuse but the right one: they were inept.

Some saw the funny side:

ABC managing director Mark Scott: I think an early priority for Abbott and Hockey will be the form of the Wallabies.

Heather Ogilvie: Katter AND Palmer will look like the two old boys up in the balcony in the Muppet show.

  1. However, miserable though it was, if we take it purely from an industry perspective, it might not be all doom. The Coalition has historically delivered for the film and TV industry and it was George Brandis who saw through the Offset legislation. This last AALP government didn’t do a whole lot for film and TV, and effectively buried the Convergence Review recommendations.

  2. I think that some of these updates, if the pages are not public domain, should have remained private. Especially the Julie Marlow one. Was permission sought to publish these?
