Press release from AFI Awards
Today the Australian Film Institute revealed the list of Feature Film Contenders for the 2010 Samsung Mobile AFI Awards.
Films by prominent directors such as Jane Campion (Bright Star), Scott Hicks (The Boys Are Back) and Nadia Tass (Matching Jack) alongside filmmakers making their feature debut, Stuart Beattie (Tomorrow When The War Began), David Michôd (Animal Kingdom), Daina Reid (I Love You Too) and new films from Rachel Perkins (Bran Nue Dae), Jeremy Sims (Beneath Hill 60) and Michael and Peter Speirig (Daybreakers) are amongst the films competing for nominations for the 2010 Samsung Mobile AFI Awards.
AFI CEO, Damian Trewhella said: “2010 marked an exceptional year for Australian screen production and we’re delighted 2011 is shaping up strongly as well. Works from both world renowned and exceptional emerging talents illuminate a refreshingly diverse and exciting slate of Australian films that are creating waves at home and abroad. If you’ve an appetite for big screen entertainment, make sure you catch most of this bumper film harvest and participate in its yield, another intensely competitive awards season.”
Of the 19 feature films in contention for AFI Awards this year, eight were directed by women including Julie Bertucelli (The Tree), Sue Brooks (Subdivision), Belinda Chayko (Lou) and Claire McCarthy (The Waiting City).
“In a landmark year for women, female directors account for eight of the 19 features in competition. In an international industry where women are still significantly under-represented, Australia is heading in the right direction. While earlier this year Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Direction, Australian female directors are among some of the most prolific and respected, here and overseas,” Damian Trewhella said.
All of the feature films in contention for this year’s 2010 Samsung Mobile AFI Awards as well as the nominated non-feature films will be screened for AFI Members and the public at the 2010 Samsung Mobile AFI Awards Screenings in Melbourne and Sydney from late August.
The nominees for the 2010 Samsung Mobile AFI Awards will be announced in October.
