The Australian short film Crossbow, written and directed by David Michôd, has been selected to screen in the Corto-Cortissimo short film competition at the Venice International Film Festival, it was announced overnight.
Produced by Angie Fielder and Polly Staniford, Crossbow was funded under the NSW Film and Television Office Young Filmmakers Fund. It stars Joel Edgerton, Lisa Chappell, Cy Standen and Mirrah Foulkes.

Being selected to screen at Venice is a wonderful result for any filmmaker,’ Acting CEO of the Australian Film Commission Chris Fitchett, commented. ‘Venice has selected some excellent short films from Australia in recent years and Crossbow is another fine example of the world class filmmaking talent in Australia.’
Crossbow recently premiered at the Sydney Film Festival and will screen at this year’s Brisbane and Melbourne International Film Festivals with David Michôd participating in the MIFF Accelerator program. The Venice screening will be the film’s international premiere.
Also selected to screen In Competition is the US feature The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, directed and co-written by Australian filmmaker, Andrew Dominik (Chopper).
The 64th edition of the Venice Biennale, celebrating its 75th anniversary, will run from 29 August to 8 September, 2007.
