Australians miss out at Golden Globes

Australian actors Nicole Kidman, Guy Pearce, Cate Blanchett, and Naomi Watts, as well as writer-director Adam Elliot, have missed out at this year’s Golden Globe Awards.

Elliot’s dark claymation Memoir of a Snail was nominated in the Best Motion Picture – Animated category, but lost to Latvian cat film Flow.

The animated category included last year’s mega-hits: Inside Out 2 and Moana 2, The Wild Robot, and the latest in the long running Wallace & Gromit series, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

Guy Pearce was nominated for Best Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a film for The Brutalist, with the award going to Kieran Culkin for his performance in A Real Pain. However, The Brutalist still had a strong night wining three awards: Best Film in the Drama Category, Best Actor for Adrien Brody, and Best Director for Brady Corbet.

Nicole Kidman was nominated for Best Female Actor in a Film – Drama for Babygirl. She has won five Globes in previous years (To Die For, Moulin Rogue!, The Hours, Being the Ricardos and two for Big Little Lies (acting and producing)) and been nominated 20 times. The award went to Fernanda Torres for her performance in I’m Still Here.

Cate Blanchett (for Disclaimer) and Naomi Watts (for Feud: Capote vs the Swans) were both nominated in the Best Female Actor in a limited/anthology TV series category with the award going to Jodie Foster for True Detective: Night Country.

The song Forbidden Road (written by Robbie Williams, Freddy Wexler, and Sacha Skarbek) from Australian film Better Man was also nominated in the Best original song – film category, which was won by El Mal, from Spanish Netflix film Emilia Pérez.

Emilia Pérez was the only film alongside The Brutalist to garner multiple wins on the night, with both films taking home the top prizes.
