Cockatoo Island film festival descends into PR disaster

The opening night of the Cockatoo Island Film Festival descended into a PR disaster after punters were left stranded, many venting their frustrations on social media.

Reports suggest that at least 100 people, including buyers of tickets costing $120, were sent to the bar for free drinks after being turned away from cinemas.

Complaints ranged from poor signage and a lack of marshals, to overpriced food and beverage, and uncomfortable cinema seats. One disgruntled patron tweeted: “Thank god I wasn't the only one to notice the terrible organisation of the Cockatoo Island Film Festival opening night:”

  1. Possibly the worst organised event my friends and I have EVER been to, almost verging on false advertising. We will never go again, which is such a shame as the location is unique but in all honesty my teenage daughter would have ran a better event.

  2. I attended the Opening Night of Cockatoo Island Film Festival and was impressed with the big cinema set up and calibre of the film. Past arts events I have attended on the island have been quite empty, the fact that thousands turned up for a single screening – where unfortunately some missed out – is still a good sign for potential of the event. Funny that even the film press choose to focus on the negatives instead of the positives this could mean for our industry – which needs events that promote watching and sharing films, rather than just downloading then at home!
