Copyright issues explained in free expert booklet launched online this week

Film Australia has produced a new resource for Australian documentary makers, providing a free guide to copyright issues in documentary making in a booklet released on its website this week.

The paper, written by commercial law firm Holding Redlich, provides a definitive guide to the laws governing copyright and particularly explains the distinction between ownership of copyright and the contractual right to receive revenues.

Titled Introduction to Copyright and related issues for documentary filmmakers, the downloadable booklet explains Australian copyright, exceptions to the law and the range of rights and provisions related to documentary filmmaking.

It provides guidelines to areas like to performer and moral rights, as well as covering new technology issues, equity and a handy 8-point checklist as part of the 24-page paper.   

‘This booklet has been prepared to assist documentary filmmakers in their business and contractual decisions and provides a free range of expert advice for them to reference,’ said Film Australia CEO Ms Daryl Karp.
