Dame Joan Sutherland Sydney performance in cinemas

Press release from Megan Rose Management

To celebrate the life of Dame Joan Sutherland, CinemaLive will be delivering the 1983 Sydney Opera House Sutherland Pavarotti Gala performance to cinemas Australia wide from November 26.

Hosted by Opera Australia and billed as the ‘concert of the century’, the Sutherland Pavarotti 1983 gala performances at the Sydney Opera House were clearly not to be missed as they drew record crowds and shattered the Sydney television ratings records when broadcast LIVE on ABC TV.

Featuring Arias and duets that were landmarks in the careers of both Sutherland and Pavarotti including La Traviata, Lucia di Lammermoor, La Sonnambula Pagliacci and Tosca, the concert has been digitally remastered and will be screened in cinemas in high definition for the very first time.

Reviews include:

"…an occasion so unique that it had to be musical history in the making" Maria Preauer, The Australian

"Last night's Sutherland-Pavarotti-Bonynge concert was a remarkable celebration of fame, Italiante lyricism and good singing. The amount of persona and musical excitement it generated fulfilled the expectations of an enormous concert-going and TV-viewing public." SMH

"An observer on the moon could have pin-pointed the Sydney Opera House last night – so glittering was the audience gathered to see "the concert of the century". The king of the high Cs Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti, and our own Dame Joan Sutherland came together under the steely eye and flying baton of conductor Richard Bonynge to present a Gala Benefit Concert……” Daily Mirror, 24 Jan 1983

The Dame Joan Sutherland cinema event will be in addition to the Opera Australia performances at Sydney Opera House already scheduled to be screened in cinemas over the coming 12 months as part of the recent agreement between CinemaLive, Opera Australia and Sydney Opera House to deliver the very best of Australian Opera performances from Sydney’s iconic landmark.
