Australian vampire film Daybreakers was one of the top 50 worldwide highest-grossing independent films of last year, according to new statistics.
The Spierig brothers film, starring TV actress Claudia Karvan alongside Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe, was 31 on the list, after raking in $US50.6 million worldwide, according to the Independent Film & Television Alliance.
Released in Australia in January on 135 screens, the film only made $2.49 million Down Under but it made up for that in overseas territories such as the US ($US30.1 million).
Last year the directors of the film criticised Hoyts Distribution’s marketing of the film after the performance locally, as reported by IF.
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse topped the list, grossing $US562.8 million globally, while Resident Evil: Afterlife ($US270.7 million) and The Expendables ($US228.5 million) came second and third respectively.
Thirty-seven English-language titles made the list, while Japan, France and Italy movies also made big money worldwide.
