Press Release from NMIT
As part of the NMIT (Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE) Super Thursday information series, NMIT’s Screen and Media program will be opening its studio doors to screen and media industry hopefuls during two information sessions before the end of the year.
“If you have ever thought about a career in television broadcast or video production you shouldn’t miss our Super Thursday info sessions,” says NMIT Screen and Media Program Coordinator, Darren Steffen. “These sessions represent two rare opportunities to check out a fully operational HD television production studio, talk to our current students and to talk to our trainers who have years of industry experience and know exactly what skills and experience employers are looking for in graduates. These sessions are a must for anyone contemplating a career in camera operation, lighting, sound, editing, directing or studio production management.”
The Super Thursday sessions will include a tour of the production facilities at NMIT’s Collingwood campus, provide details on course costs, content, showcase current student’s work and also offer advice on the interview process for entry into NMIT courses.
NMIT offers the Certificate IV in Screen and Media and the Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media as full-time study while the Diploma of Screen and Media is available via part-time study and is taught in the evenings which make it ideal for people looking to develop or enhance their existing skills in TV and video production.
“NMIT courses operate with equipment used commonly in the industry and include non-linear editing on AVID Media Composer and Final Cut Pro,” adds Darren Steffen. “Ours students work in state-of-the-art HD Broadcast production studios which include a hard drive based recording and playback system (by EVS) utilised at all major sporting events around the world.”
NMIT has a proven track record of providing high-quality, work-ready graduates to the industry because courses focus on providing students with hands-on, skills based training in up-to-date industry standard facilities. Production partnerships with industry such as a recent collaboration with McGuire Media to produce the weekly racing program, Racing Review, give students the opportunity to gain real industry experience and graduate with genuine production credits on their CV. This partnership is expanding to more shows in the near future.
“Our programs really focus on providing students with experience in working with real clients and this prepares them well for working in the industry, says Steffen. “This was demonstrated very recently when one of our Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media students was selected by Channel 10 for a try out position that may lead to a 6-month traineeship. The competition for try-out positions was intense and only two applicants were selected.”
