News from FTI
A combination of fresh faces and familiar names have dominated the early career nominations at the 24th WA Screen Awards. Last year’s Young Filmmaker of the Year winner, and former Central Institute of Technology student, Mike Hoath, has made a strong return in 2011 with his new film Good Pretender up for 5 awards.
This includes nominations for Best Film, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Production Design & Best Screenplay. Good Pretender was made in 2010 thanks to a $15,000 prize won by Mike Hoath and 2008 Young Filmmaker of the year, Maziar Lahooti through the Doorpost Film Competition.
Interestingly, Good Pretender will face some stiff competition in the some categories from ECU / WA Screen Academy film, Casualties.
Produced by Jessica Carlson, this zero budget, student film has been nominated for an extraordinary 4 awards including Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Sound as well as the Central Institute Technology Award for Best Tertiary production.
Present day fantasy, Betrand the Terrible has also been well represented picking up nominations for Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Actress & Best Original Music.
Presented by the Film & Television Institute WA (FTI), the WA Screen Awards has remained the premier celebration of film in Western Australia since its inception in 1981. This tradition is certain to continue with a gala ceremony to be held at the Octagon Theatre, Saturday the 19th March.
Many former WA Screen Award nominees such as Elissa Down (Writer/Director, Black Balloon), James Bogle (Director, Closed for Winter), Britt Arthur (International award winning documentary maker) and Kenta McGrath (respected local music video maker), have gone on to forge bright careers in the local, national and international film industry.
Film & Television Institute CEO Graeme Sward said he was expecting big things from all the nominees.
“In 2011 FTI will be celebrating its 40th year of helping filmmakers make the films they want to make. For this reason it is especially pleasing to hear many judges remark that this year’s entries are our strongest ever. FTI congratulates all the nominees and looks forward to seeing what national and international success they will achieve in the future.”
Tickets to the WA Screen Awards are currently available through the Film & Television Institute on 9431 6700 or www.fti.asn.au.
The WA public are also encouraged to vote for their favourite, with screenings of all the nominees taking place at the Bohemia Outdoor Film Festival on the 8th, 10th, 15th & 17th February.
