The Rees Labor Government is backing the next generation of film and television industry professionals with new grants under its Emerging Filmmakers Fund.
Minister Assisting the Premier on the Arts, Virginia Judge today announced that four filmmaking teams will receive a total of $120,000 to produce four short films.
“The Emerging Filmmaker Fund has a fantastic track record in identifying emerging talent and supporting career development,” she said.
“It has provided almost $3 million in support to 119 film projects that have gone on to screen around the world. “It is important that we continue to foster young talent so that we can grow the skills and experience that the screen industry needs for tomorrow.”
Ms Judge said the four selected projects are:
• Two Ships – Producer Natasha Ferguson, Writer/director Nicky Arnall;
• Diamond Bay – Producer Paul Watters, Writer/director David Ratner;
• Mooncake & Crab – Producer Lauren Edwards, Writer Isabelle Li, Director Heng Tang; and
• Waiting for the Turning of the Earth – Producer Anita Cooper, Writer/director David Evan Giles.
“The short films will give these young filmmakers an opportunity to take creative control of a project from conception to delivery,” she said.
“They have worked behind the scenes on major Australian film and television projects such as Cedar Boys, Samson and Delilah, All Saints and Home & Away.
“Now they are taking the next step in their professional careers by writing, directing and producing their own short films.
“Our goal is to support, recognise and applaud talent in our screen industry by supporting emerging talent and creating career pathways.”
